Italian Student Visa Documents: The Complete Checklist
Every document you need for an Italian student visa (type D), based on an official 2026 checklist from an Italian consulate: Universitaly pre-enrolment, diploma with apostille, CIMEA or Declaration of Value, B2 certificate, €10,179.85 proof of funds, insurance and accommodation.
Short answer: to study a bachelor's or master's degree in Italy you need a type D study visa. The core documents are: a Universitaly pre-enrolment approved by your university; your secondary school diploma (12 years of schooling) with an apostille and an Italian translation; a CIMEA statement or Declaration of Value; a B2 language certificate; proof of at least €10,179.85 per year; proof of accommodation; health insurance covering at least €30,000; and a flight booking. For 2026/27 the visa application deadline is 30 November 2026.
The list below follows the official 2026 checklist of the Consulate General of Italy in Istanbul. Every Italian embassy and consulate publishes its own version, and some documents are country-specific, so always check the current list of the mission responsible for where you live.
Identity and application documents
- National visa application form: completed, dated and signed. Both parents sign if the applicant is under 18.
- One recent passport photo: light background, 35 x 40 mm.
- Passport: issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 15 months from your planned arrival, with at least two blank pages.
- Copy of your national ID or residence permit in the country where you apply.
- Civil status documents required by the consulate, such as proof of residence and family composition.
University and education documents
- Universitaly pre-enrolment summary, as approved by the university. The consulate states it plainly: if the university does not approve your pre-enrolment on Universitaly, the visa cannot be issued.
- Secondary school diploma: a certified copy showing at least 12 years of schooling, with an apostille, translated into Italian, with the translation apostilled too.
- National entrance exam result, if your country has one for university access (for Turkish students this is the YKS certificate).
- Recognition of your qualification: CIMEA's statements of comparability and verification, or a Declaration of Value. Your university decides which it needs.
- Language certificate: at least B2 Italian for Italian-taught programmes; for English-taught programmes, an internationally recognised certificate at B2 or above in all four skills (for example IELTS).
Proof of funds: how much money do you need?
For 2026/27 and 2027/28 you must show at least €10,179.85 per year; details in our proof of funds article. The consulate asks for:
- A bank statement stamped and signed by the bank, showing the last 6 months of transactions
- Proof of income: payslips for the last 3 months, tax returns, pension, social security records, rental contracts, property deeds
- If your parents support you: a letter of guarantee signed by them, with a copy of their ID
Important: according to the consulate, the balance on the day of application is not enough on its own. Your family's overall, regular financial situation is assessed. The money must come from a lawful, traceable source: you, your parents or one relative up to the fourth degree. The cost of a return trip must be covered on top of this amount.
Accommodation, insurance and travel
- Accommodation: a hotel booking for the first period, a registered rental contract, a signed declaration of hospitality with the host's ID, or a place in a university residence.
- Health insurance: valid in the EU, covering at least €30,000 for emergency care, hospital stays and repatriation. You will show the same policy when applying for your residence permit in Italy.
- Outbound flight booking.
- Visa fee, paid where you submit the application. In Turkey, applications go through iDATA.
How long does an Italian student visa take?
According to the consulate, the legal processing time for type D study visas is up to 90 days. Many applications are decided sooner, but don't count on it. The deadline is 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 and 31 October 2027 for 2027/28. Pre-enrolment, recognition and translations can take weeks, so start preparing before your admission letter arrives.
Common mistakes
- Booking the visa appointment before the university has approved your Universitaly pre-enrolment
- Getting the diploma apostilled but forgetting that the translation needs an apostille too
- Depositing a large sum just before applying without being able to explain where it came from
- Buying insurance below €30,000 or with limits on hospital costs
Frequently asked questions
Whose name should the bank account be in?
Yours or your parents'; one relative up to the fourth degree can also act as guarantor. If your family supports you, add a letter of guarantee.
Which documents need translating?
Your diploma needs an Italian translation. Other documents in a language other than Italian or English generally need an official translation; check your consulate's list for the exact rule.
Can I apply for the visa before I am admitted?
No. You need the university's approval of your Universitaly pre-enrolment first.
Bottom line
Most visa problems come from the order and timing of documents: pre-enrolment approval, recognition, apostilles and translations all depend on each other. We can check your documents with you and build your application timeline. Fill in the free assessment form to get started.
