Sworn Translation for Italy: Turkish and Italian Documents
A sworn translation in Turkey is signed by a translator registered with a notary, and the notary certifies the signature. For use in Italy, offices often ask instead for the Italian consulate's certificate of conformity or for a translation sworn before an Italian court (asseverazione).
Short answer: In Turkey, a sworn translation is made and signed by a translator who has taken an oath before a notary; the notary then certifies the signature. For documents used in Italy this is often not enough. Italian offices usually ask for the Italian consulate's certificate of conformity or for a translation sworn before an Italian court (asseverazione).
Three ways to certify a translation for Italy
| Method | Where | When |
|---|---|---|
| Notarised sworn translation | A notary in Turkey | For Turkish offices; some Italian offices accept it |
| Consular certificate of conformity | Italy's missions in Turkey | When the Italian office wants official certification of a translation made in Turkey (ordinary time in Istanbul: 30 days) |
| Asseverazione | A court clerk's office in Italy | When the document is used in Italy and the procedure can be done there |
How asseverazione works
- The translator appears in person at the court clerk's office with ID and signs a sworn statement.
- The original, the translation and the statement are bound together in that order.
- A €16 revenue stamp is due for every 4 pages or 100 lines.
- Translations between two foreign languages cannot be sworn directly; they go through Italian.
- For use abroad, the clerk's signature is legalised at the Procura della Repubblica.
The correct order
Get the original, have it apostilled, translate it together with the apostille, then certify the translation in the way the Italian office requires.
Frequently asked questions
Which documents usually need an Italian sworn translation?
Diplomas and transcripts, civil status records, consent forms and powers of attorney, criminal records and company documents such as signature circulars and trade registry gazettes.
Can I have my translation done in Italy?
Yes. If the document is used in Italy, a translation sworn before an Italian court is the method Italian offices recognise most easily.
